We will have a robot in our home. It will hover, at eye height, so I can talk to it and it can respond where I can see it. It will feel friendly, but not be a humanoid. I’d like it to be sparkly, and for the internal light and colour to change dependent on how I feel. It will interact with me, but will not necessarily speak – not all the time anyway, when I want company it will, but it won’t when I don’t. It will have enough presence to be able to bring me objects. It will be present when I need it, a thought call will bring it to me.
I don’t think I would want my robot to come with me, outside the home, I can’t see a big need for that, I am pretty independent and enjoy my own solitude. Perhaps it might be useful if I needed it, for it to come with me, hovering behind, or beside me when I am outside.
It will be the chief helpful system in my home, but my home will be so much more. The hover-bot would be the chief coordinator of my environment.
Let me give you a tour of my life.
When I wake up in the morning, Max will appear in my bedroom and having checked my diary, will suggest something to wear that my wardrobe robots will be able to select for me. My wardrobe will display a vision of me in the creation suggested. They will also be able to embellish my outfits, quickly adding on a little something to ‘zhzh’ up the jumper that I am getting a little bored of. Once I have chosen, I will leave the wardrobe bots to their work, and progress to the bathroom.
The bathroom will be like one of those ‘superloos’ that appeared on UK high streets in the early 1990s – it will be washed and dried after each use in order to keep it spotlessly clean.
Bathing will be much as it is now – although, I will have a small grooming system to deal with personal grooming – hair, hard skin removal etc. Teeth cleaning is going to be so much better with my mouth bots – small round brushes, that you will put in your mouth covered in minty gel. They will oscillate around your mouth, between your teeth, over gums and tongue cleaning as they go, leaving you all over minty fresh and so much cleaner than using a conventional toothbrush. You’ll spit them into the sink when you’re finished with them, they will clean themselves and head back to their storage box on their own.
Max will blow me dry after my shower, leaving me warm and dry ready to head back to the bedroom to get ready for the day.
My clothes will be ready at the front of my wardrobe, for me to put on.
Dressed, I head through to the kitchen where I will make breakfast. I like to drink tea in the morning, but it has to be really strong that is left for a while with the tea leaves in it. Max will have made this for me while I was in the shower, and it will be brewed to perfection. The water for my husband’s coffee will be cooling ready for him to begin his ritual of engineering the perfect cup…without robot help!
I will select some fruit to have with my muesli and the chopping board will prepare this for me, while I select my reading material for the day on the screen on the wall controlled via gestures. Some current affairs to keep up to date with what is going on in the world. The chopping board will ‘adios’ any fruit peelings into the kitchen’s composting system and leave the fruit ready for me to add my cereal to. When I have finished eating, I will put my dishes in the dishwasher, and they will be cleaned during the day. Waste management will be handled by the smart city systems, ensuring perfect separation of waste at source, allowing for efficient management of recycling and energy generation from waste where possible.
Before I head out for the day, I will check out the supply system in the kitchen with Max, he will let me know what we are running low on, and I will tell him whether to add it to our shopping list or not. We’ll also chat about what is planned for dinner that evening, if it is a time consuming dish to prepare, Max will use the kitchen to get things started before I get home after work.
If we get ill, a visit to the doctor will be made over the internet, they will be able to examine you using our communications systems or you can diagnose yourself with a Tricorder like in Star Trek. Once the diagnosis has been made, treatment can be prescribed, using a variety of different methods. Perhaps nano-bots that will repair or treat infection locally. They will appear at your home in your direct delivery port (like a postbox!), straight after your consultation or perhaps my home replicator will manufacture them for me.
To get to work or wherever I am going that day, I will use either the nearest communal high speed rapid transport system or some kind of individual personal transport system. This could be a bike, a self driving electric car, small electric scooter or Segway like device.
This will mean that the outside environment will be very different. Quieter with less vehicles, cleaner, safer. The environmental crisis exacerbated by the internal combustion engine will be more manageable. Renewable, cleaner energy production will be the norm.
When I leave it during the day, the shopping that my smart cupboards or robot helper have ordered will have been delivered and put away carefully. Any cleaning will take place using the robot vacuum cleaner and other systems in the home.
At work – I am not sure where that will be, but somewhere with other people, as we will still interact and enjoy company. Remote communication will happen via my own communication system. I think I would like to use a telepresence system, which will be thought and gesture controlled. The person I am contacting, will decide whether they are happy to accept my communication when I call, as I will do likewise. For messaging, my thought control system will send messages straight from my head and any replies will appear in my mind, as if I am hearing the conversation or maybe in the display of my glasses. Or perhaps we might just meet in that little cafe down the street!
Exercise will continue to be important, we will always need to keep our bodies in good working order – I will still enjoy swimming and riding my bike most. My swimsuit will use a smart fabric that ensures the water just surrounding me is heated to the optimal temperature for me – warm enough so that you don’t have that sharp intake of breath when you get in. It will almost be as if you are swimming in your own perfect temperature bubble. Riding my bike – I like to do this to get to work, and will still be able to do this. The bike will have it’s own onboard robot cleaning and repair system. When I get to work any dirt will be cleaned off the bike by the bots and they will be lube it up ready for the ride home.
Payment for goods will be contactless and invisible, dealt with by our devices with our authorisation.
Shopping – food shopping will be done over the internet, using smart sensor based storage systems in the home to identify what products need to be bought. Delivery will be direct to the home at the time you choose.
Clothes shopping will be different. You will shop for looks – you could still do this communally with your friends (it is an enjoyable experience for most women!), but they will be tailored specifically to your own personal measurements and delivered directly to your home wardrobe, ready to wear. If you want to add a personal embellishment, this will be easy at the point of purchase, or as described above, your friendly wardrobe bots will do it for you.
Getting home from my day out, I will be greeted by Max, if he didn’t come along. He will tell me how progress with dinner is going, I can take over if I fancy helping with the cooking. My entertainment system will perform a film or music of my choosing, using the sound and vision system available in my home. Sound will be all enveloping and any film will be projected at exactly the right angle onto an opaque floating screen that will ensure perfect lighting for the selected movie.
My office will be full of all the great things that I love to be surrounded by. Knitting needles, yarn, my sewing machine, fabrics, threads, sequins, glitter, tools. My wool and fabric stash will be perfectly stored – filed my cupboard bots that will accurately record the amount of fabric / wool available, colour etc, so that it is easily searchable on my vision system (screen). Max will help if I find I need some supplies mid project – ordering and producing them quickly. Or perhaps, we’ll use our own high-speed mini-manufacturing system to produce what we need. Sometimes I enjoy knitting or sewing with my friends. The 3D scanners in my sewing room will scan me in real time and project me and my friends into a virtual knitting cafe where we can chat and share what we are working on. Hmm, virtual cake, that is not so good though, perhaps our physical knitting groups will endure after all!
Heat and light in my home will be automatically controlled. The city’s smartgrid will control heat and electricity to all homes and thermostatic control will be available in each room in the home. Lights in each room that is unoccupied will automatically be set to off. Energy saving technologies will be built into the home. You will be able to see how much energy you are using and regulate it where necessary. Max will help here.
At the end of the day, my clothes will be filed, by small robots that will pick them up from where they lie, they will be shaken and folded and hung neatly ready for their next use. When something is dirty, it will be put in the washing machine or transported to the dry cleaner, then returned to the filing system, once it is clean and ready for use again. Or perhaps the clothes will be cleaned by small robots before they are finally stored.
Max will sleep with the rest of the household, powering down and charging ready for the next day, after all everything needs to rest sometime. Tomorrow is the weekend, and my husband, dog and I are heading out on our bikes to enjoy the mountains, no phones, no robots, no data. Well, maybe I will let Max come, he works so hard for us.
