Ben Sowter, Director of Research at QS, said: “Though Chinese cities have seen consistent drops in rank this year, QS do not believe that the underlying data is discouraging for Chinese universities, or for the Chinese Ministry of Education. These drops are primarily happening due to the increased costs an international student might incur when they choose to study in China, but this is, in part, testament to China’s still-strengthening economy.”
Sowter continued: “Cost of living may be high, but Mainland China is home to some of the top-ranked universities on the planet, and students studying there can also look forward to post-study work in a thriving economic climate. Therefore, while the Chinese Ministry of Education continues to offer generous sponsorship packages, and while the budget allocated for the education of foreign students continues to increase, we expect that China’s higher education system will meet its target of welcoming half a million international students next year.”
