Wednesday, 27th February 2019: The latest edition of the world’s most-consulted university rankings portfolio will indicate that Mainland Chinese universities are continuing to become more globally competitive, with the number of Mainland Chinese departments among the top 50 in the world for their subject increasing year-on-year.[1]

The 2019 instalment of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, to be released on Wednesday 27th February by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds, will see 96 Mainland Chinese departments rank 50th or above in the world – nine more than in 2018’s edition of the rankings. It will also see China Agricultural University achieve a top-10 placement for the first time (10th), with only two other Mainland Chinese universities – Tsinghua University and Peking University – making at least one appearance in a global top-10.

The exercise is an extensive overview of international higher education performance, with over 1200 universities from 78 locations ranked in 48 subject tables and five broad disciplinary tables. The results are available at www.TopUniversities.com, and were accessed over 175 million times in 2018.

· Peking University has more top-50 departments than any other Mainland Chinese university: 28. It is followed by Tsinghua University, which has 22 top-50 departments; Fudan University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which have 10 top-50 departments each; and Zhejiang University, which has 5 top-50 departments;
· Tsinghua University’s Civil & Structural Engineering department is Mainland China’s strongest subject offering, relative to global competitors. It ranks 9th globally. Also achieving a top-10 rank are Tsinghua University’s Architecture/Built Environment offering (10th globally) and Peking University’s Modern Languages department, which ranks 10th in the world;
· In total, 651 departments across 76 Chinese universities are ranked. 253 improve their rank, while only 102 see their rank decline. 185 departments remain stable in rank. These results constitute overall progress for the Mainland Chinese higher education system once more;
· However, Mainland China’s universities have also lost representation at the very top of the rankings. There is one fewer Mainland Chinese university among the top-10 of the 48 subject tables, and three fewer Mainland Chinese universities among the top-20;
· In Asia, Singapore remains dominant at the very top of the rankings, with 14 departments among the top 10 of the 48 subject tables.
