北京时间5月30日上午八点，CGTN主持人刘欣与美国福克斯商业电视台主持人Trish Regan在其节目Trish Regan Primetime中进行了直播辩论。
辩论中，Trish提到了中国发展问题，她表示中国作为世界第二大经济体，打算何时停止使用“发展中国家”这个称号，并且停止向世界银行借钱?
Trish: At what point, will China decide abandon its "developing country" status? And stop borrowing from World Bank?
刘欣表示，这一问题的讨论正在进行中，现在确实有很多人讨论中国已经变成一个强国。她也听到过很多有关中国发展的讨论。刘欣还援引了Trish在节目中曾经说过中国必须长大的评论。刘欣表示，中国也想长大，中国并不希望自己一直贫穷落后的。但要讨论中国是否是发展中国家，首先要定义什么是发展中国家。中国从总体来看是世界第二大经济体，但不要忘记我们有14亿人民，这比美国人口数量的三倍还要多。如果你将这么大的经济体除以人口数量，那么中国的人均GDP还不足美国人均GDP的六分之一，也比欧洲一些发达国家要低。所以说到中国现在所处的位置，这真的是一个非常复杂的事情。整体上看中国已经很强大，但算到人均却又很少。所以我们确实可以做成一些大事，这也是世界人民对中国的期待，期待中国在世界舞台上做出更多贡献。
Liuxin: This kind of discussion is going on. And I've heard various discussions about this. Indeed, there are people talking about China already becoming so big. Why don't you just grow up? Basically, I think you said in your program as well. I think we want to grow up. We don't want to be dwarfed or poor or under-developed all the time. But it depends on how you define developing countries. If you look at China in overall size, the Chinese economy is very big. But don't forget we have 1.4 billion people. That is over 3 times the population of the US. If you devide the second-largest economy in the world, per capita GDP comes to less than one sixth of that in the US, and even less than some more developed countries in Europe. So you tell me where we should put ourselves. This is a very complicated issue, because like I said the per capita is very small, but the overall is very big. So we can do a lot of big things and people are looking upon us to do much more around the world.
刘欣指出中国在努力为联合国做出贡献。中国在世界和平方面(peace-keeping missions)做出了杰出贡献，而这正是因为中国深知自己必须“长大”。刘欣感谢Trish在此对中国有一次给予了提醒(reminder)。
